The Postdoctoral Fellow will have earned a Doctoral degree from an APA Accredited psychology program and will work under the direct supervision of the Staff Psychologist or Police and Public Safety Psychologist in providing state-of-the-art forensic risk management psychological evaluations to law enforcement and other safety-sensitive organizations. Work experiences include risk and threat assessment, psychological pre-employment screening services, critical incident debriefings, and both police/public safety and corporate fitness for duty evaluations.
Quarterly, the postdoctoral fellow will be required to perform statistical analyses to produce reports to include adverse impact analysis on the company’s largest agencies to ensure there has been no inadvertent adverse impact on their hiring and interrater reliability to ensure consistency across evaluators. Postdoctoral fellows may also be involved in ongoing research and are encouraged to generate research questions and design for future publication.
Training and supervision are critical components of the postdoctoral position. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for completing the required reading and will attend monthly case consultation meetings and weekly supervision with their supervising psychologist. They will also be responsible for obtaining the required number of training hours to complete their postdoctoral fellowship within 12 months.
Postdoctoral fellows are expected to pass the national licensing exam within 6 months of the start of their fellowship and are expected to obtain licensure within the state of their fellowship program within 14 months. We expect that the postdoctoral fellow will apply the postdoctoral training hours to the required hours of training in police and public safety psychology necessary to apply for Board Certification in Police and Public Safety Psychology. The 2nd year of the postdoctoral training experience will allow the newly licensed fellow to enhance their skills in risk assessment and will involve additional training to prepare for Board Certification.
Training also includes exposure to the field of police and public safety psychology by attending law enforcement training courses such as “Officer Involved Shootings” and “Interviews and Interrogations,” going on ride alongs, and reviewing current research in the field of law enforcement and police and public safety psychology. To further enhance learning and exposure to the field, fellows are expected to join relevant professional organizations. The postdoctoral fellow is encouraged to channel an elevated level of communication while also learning to work as an independent, self-sufficient member of our team.
Prior to beginning the fellowship, the postdoctoral candidate must have completed a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA-accredited program, as well as an APA-accredited pre-doctoral clinical internship. Excellent writing skills, evaluation techniques, and grammar are essential requirements. While postdoctoral fellows work under supervision, they are expected to independently manage their time and complete evaluations within the timeframe determined by their supervising psychologist.
